Self-contempt and depression – love yourself
It began with a question: “Am I good enough for this world?” The question triggered an uncertainty, a nagging doubt, which eventually settled on the soul, like a parasite. Self-contempt and depression – love yourself, you are beautiful.
Maybe it was your parents who could not adequately show that they loved you. Who didn’t say it clearly enough, often enough? Perhaps it was the others, the ones at school, who emphasized and reinforced the doubts you had about yourself. Or there was no obvious reason, it just became so.
Many of us have not learned to show that we appreciate others, nor to notice it when it happens. We hardly have a language for it. When someone compliments, we blush and become ashamed. How stupid is it – that we can’t accept a compliment, appreciate it? And why do we so rarely compliment ourselves?
We don’t know how long we have them, the ones we love. You do not know what to expect around the next turn. It is almost only we who have lost, who knows what it means to no longer have anyone. So I say I love you, to my wife and son. Many times every day. I say I love you to my friends, to your family, if it sometimes feels small.

Back to you. You saw yourself in the mirror, and the question increased in strength. As you saw the pimples in your forehead, or you thought you had too many pounds. You had more pounds than the model in the women’s magazine. The question gradually became contemptuous. Self-contempt and depression – love yourself.
The contempt grew. You developed a distorted picture of yourself, but you didn’t realize that was what you were doing. You just listened to the voice saying, “You’re not good enough,” “You’re fat and ugly, and no one will ever love you.” But what the voice says is a lie, and it’s time to stop listening to it.
For you are more than good enough. You are unique, a beautiful being. There is no one like you in the entire Universe. Every man and every woman is a star.
I love you. I really do, even though I haven’t met you. As I don’t always love everyone, not the one who rides a bike past my four-year-old (not right then), but I love the man. Every human being is a whole world in itself. Irreplaceable.
Maybe you should start loving yourself. Look at yourself with a fresh look, see your strengths, what you are good at. For you are beautiful, albeit not as superficial as the retouched models. Shit in them, they have no relevance. You are beautiful, a masterpiece of 100,000 years of human evolution, a concert played by thousands of organs and billions of cells. I care about you, and I’m not alone in that. If the voice says something else, it lies.
